About Virginia Abrasives

Virginia Abrasives' roots date back to the early 1970's, when a hard rock garnet abrasive mining business in the Adirondack mountains of New York decided to invest in the sandpaper manufacturing business.

Our initial focus was aimed at producing the world’s best sandpaper, using hard-rock garnet abrasives. Over time and due to customer requests, the company’s markets as well as product lines have expanded into a broader offering for the construction trades.

 

The following is a timeline of key historical events:

1970: Barton Mines acquired the assets of Vulcan Abrasives Corporation, and changed the company name to Dur-Tek Abrasive Corporation

1971: Vulcan equipment moved to Petersburg, VA to capitalize on proximity to nearby furniture industry

1977: Company name changed to Virginia Abrasives Corporation

1978: The Equipment Rental industry is identified as an underserved market to which Virginia Abrasives could add significant value

1987: Professional flooring market program launched – Black Satin, Red Satin product lines 

1992: Finish Line program launched targeting the Consumer, Paint & Retail Market

2001: VAC acquired the assets of Plymouth Coated Products Corporation and entered the industrial abrasives market

2002: VAC launched a full line of branded diamond abrasives to the Equipment Rental industry

2005: VAC opened West Coast Distribution Center in Simi Valley, CA 

2008: VAC acquired the assets of Smithton Diamond Products 

2009: VAC launched Real Deal Sales initiative in Southern California 

2010: VAC launched power trowel blade product line

2013: VAC partnered with Primatech as exclusive distributor of flooring tools and accessories to the US rental market

2015: VAC launched a branded line of construction equipment – core drills and tile saws -  to complement the successful diamond abrasive tooling line

2016: VAC expanded its equipment line – grinders, walk behind and cutoff saws 

2017: VAC added dust control vacuum systems to its offering

2018: VAC acquired certain assets of Calwestern Sales Corporation, a California-based distributor of tools, equipment and supplies

2019: VAC added Eddy Floor equipment for removing soft and hard materials from concrete floors

2019: Brookstone Partners acquired Virginia Abrasives
